Identity

Long summers spent with his grandfather in the country side gave Giovanni Foffani a strong personal identity and a clear direction for life, now dedicated to the production of high quality wines in the ancient house of Clauiano.
All winery operations are decided internally, while Elisabetta, Woman of Wine, takes more care of reception and hospitality. The team is also composed of their sons Guglielmo and Lorenzo as well as Massimiliano Vecchiato (vineyard and cellar) and Nicoletta Gottardo (administration and commercial support).

Any good agricultural activity is the expression of man’s consciousness about conservation of biodiversity, This was definitely true in the past, when the countryside was looking like a huge garden with fields cultivated with seasonal crops. It should be noted that man has always reduced biodiversity by specializing crops for nourishment of his own species. Good agriculture though avoids excess of specialization, and any farmer is in fact like a sailor, capable of  breathing in the wind a scent of universality that overcomes greed.

In agriculture, science must be used carefully, as the use of inappropriate protocols may generate dangerous imbalances in the countryside and to the man himself. Today, the most rational answer seems to be integrated environmental protection, which helps nature to maintain its balance by minimizing and differentiating external interference.

Production of wine is not separated from aesthetics in general, that may be seen here like the measure of an optimal balance between ingenuity and nature. Our exhibition “The Colors of Wine” in the old barn on the first floor is an aesthetic synthesis of our production activity and represents this way our identity.

Family and Farm

Four generations linked to the genius loci of the ancient house of Clauiano.
Giovanni Foffani, now managing the winery together with his wife Elisabetta Missoni, after a professional career in engineering and finance, has been working over 20 years full-time on his property, once Calligaris.

Together with his valuable collaborator Massimiliano Vecchiato, Giovanni takes all technical and operational decisions in the vineyards and in the cellar and deals directly with foreign markets.
His wife Elisabetta, with Nicoletta Gottardo, mainly follows the reception and organization of events.
Guglielmo, biomedical engineer and musician, contributes with his creativity to cellar decisions, while Lorenzo, business and communication strategist, helps for Marketing decisions.
Diego, the elder grandson, begins to drive our tractor, while Romeo, the younger one in the picture above, is already running toward his future.

The estate dates back to the MDC century, with wine production documented since 1789.
Giovanni Foffani, sole owner, has concentrated his activity on the cultivation of his 10 hectares vineyards located beyond the house garden and the production of high quality wines.
Well valued by major wine guides, our wines are sold in Italy, Europe and overseas.

Over the years, Giovanni has provided the company with the most modern equipment for vineyard and cellar management as well as bottling and labeling. With a total production capacity of about 100,000 bottles, the equipment is used in small-scale processing to follow the natural development of the different varieties and the different lots.
All the activities are carried on in house, with full traceability of all production processes.

All activities are carried out in the context of our Historical House Calligaris-Foffani in Clauiano, one of the Most Beautiful Medieval Villages of Italy.

Environmental respect

We learned that the value of earth lies in its biodiversity, in the ability of the environment to adapt again and again to life conditions , that have continually evolved through the geological eras and continue to evolve also today.
In history, the farmer has always worked the land, applying his intelligence to the use of natural resources to the benefit of human species through specialization of cultures. The plow invention made it possible to bury the weeds in order to allow the most useful plants to grow on the surface. But limitation of weeds reduces the biodiversity of that field, specializing its production to the advantage of the human species.
The game is not to offend nature too much, because this would cause long-term damage for all living species. And the concept of environmental respect lies in balance between the benefit for man in short and very long term.
